The Lineage of Jesus Christ

One people, one promise, one unbroken line.

From Adam to Christ the account never actually breaks. Names hand to names, a covenant is made and kept, and a single line of descent carries the whole way through.

We meet it in pieces. A chapter on a Sunday, a verse on a card, a note in a margin. The thread holds — but the connections between its parts end up living in the reader's memory, or nowhere at all.

Methuselah was still living when Noah was born. Almost no one reading Genesis notices.

People have wanted to see it whole for a long time.

In 1871 Sebastian Adams engraved twenty-three feet of history onto a single sheet so that a reader could stand in front of it and see what was simultaneous. Kingdoms drawn as rivers that widen, divide and run dry. Families as lines you could follow with a finger. People still hang it on walls, and they are right to.

An engraving holds one answer beautifully. Scrollwork begins where the engraving ends: the same account held as data, so the surface can be asked again — re-dated, re-sorted, re-drawn — and so a reader can put a question to it that nobody thought to engrave.

One canvas, read all the way down.

You scroll it like a map and you descend through it. Each level answers the one above, and nothing sends you to another page to find out.

Faith, Evidence and History, on the same object.

Open a passage and all three stand beside it: what the Church has held, what the ground has given up, and what the surrounding world was recording at the time.

Faith leads, and is the only one of the three with something to say everywhere. The other two are given exactly the room the record gives them — and where a pillar has nothing, it says so rather than reaching.

All three in front of you at once, with no verdict attached.

The date is a setting, not a fact.

Two careful scholars can place the Exodus three centuries apart. Both belong on the canvas.

Every timeline picks a chronology and draws it as certainty. The choice is usually invisible and it is doing enormous work — move the Exodus and everything around it moves with it.

Here the scheme is yours to set. Competing chronologies are carried side by side, each event keeping its own confidence, and the canvas redraws when you change your mind. No scheme is the silent default, including the one the underlying data happens to assume.

It will tell you when it does not know.

Where a claim can be tested, you are shown the test — the thing that would prove it wrong — and not only the conclusion. Where a claim is of a different kind, and no material test applies, that is said plainly, because measuring a matter of faith with the wrong instrument is its own kind of dishonesty.

Every source is checked against an external authority before it ships. One that cannot be confirmed is dropped rather than printed with a caveat, and positions are attributed to the people who hold them.

Where the record is silent, so is the page. It presents; it does not adjudicate. What you conclude is yours.

Scripture, and the sources behind every claim, will never be sold here. Most of Scrollwork is free and stays free; where a larger work carries a price, it will say so plainly.
